Variety has verified that Steven Yeun will not be part of the upcoming Marvel film “Thunderbolts.” While Yeun’s casting was initially reported in February, Marvel had not officially confirmed it. It remains uncertain whether the undisclosed role originally assigned to Yeun will be reconsidered or recast.
“Thunderbolts,” based on Marvel comics featuring a group of antiheroes, is set to unite characters from “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Black Widow,” and the forthcoming “Captain America: New World Order.” The plot details are being kept under wraps.

Production of the film was temporarily halted in May due to the WGA strike, and filming has yet to commence after the conclusion of last year’s dual writers’ and actors’ strikes. Directed by Jake Schreier, known for “Paper Towns,” and scripted by Lee Sung Jin, the film’s first draft was crafted by “Black Widow” writer Eric Pearson.
The cast includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, Olga Kurylenko, Wyatt Russell, and Ayo Edebiri in an undisclosed role. Originally slated for release on July 26, 2024, the film’s premiere has been postponed to July 2025.
Yeun recently starred in Netflix’s “Beef” alongside Ali Wong, earning him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Male Actor in a Limited Series. Additionally, he has a role in Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi thriller “Mickey 17,” featuring Robert Pattinson.
