Reports suggesting a romantic involvement between Meryl Streep and Martin Short have been exaggerated. Following the Golden Globes on Sunday, fans speculated about the apparent closeness between the co-stars of “Only Murders in the Building.” However, on Tuesday, Short’s representative clarified to PEOPLE that the two are “just very good friends, nothing more.”
In October, it was confirmed by PEOPLE that the 74-year-old Mamma Mia! star is separated from her husband of 45 years, Don Gummer. Despite the recent revelation, the pair had quietly ended their romantic relationship six years ago. A representative for Streep stated to PEOPLE, “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.”
The estranged couple hadn’t been seen publicly together since the 2018 Oscars, although Streep had been wearing her wedding band just days before the split was confirmed. The three-time Oscar winner and Gummer, 77, had celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in September and share four children: son Henry and daughters Mamie, Grace, and Louisa.
Martin Short, 73, lost his wife, actress Nancy Dolman, to ovarian cancer in 2010 after 30 years of marriage. In a revealing interview with AARP The Magazine in 2019, Short referred to their relationship as a “triumph” and mentioned how he still communicates with her regularly. Short and Dolman share a daughter, Katherine, and sons Oliver and Henry.
At the recent Golden Globes, Streep and Short were seated with their “Only Murders in the Building” co-star Selena Gomez. All three actors were nominated for their roles in the hit series. Although Streep did not win an award this year, she broke her own record for the most-nominated actor in Golden Globes history with her 33rd nod and holds the record for the most all-time wins at the Globes, with nine in total. The Messenger initially reported the denial of a romantic relationship between Streep and Short.
