Manufacturing of Three Replacement Steam Generators for EDF’s Nuclear Power Plant Successfully Completed by MHI

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) recently marked the completion of manufacturing three replacement steam generators for Électricité de France S.A. (EDF)’s Nuclear Power Plant in France at MHI’s Kobe facilities on January 19, 2024.

MHI, in collaboration with Onet Technologies, has received an order for a total of 9 replacement steam generators from EDF and is set to produce the remaining 6 units in sequence.

The replacement steam generators, designed for the 900 MWe pressurized water reactor (PWR) nuclear power plant, were selected by EDF through an international bidding process. Each generator, measuring approximately 21 meters in height and weighing 330 tons, is constructed from low-alloy steel.

These vital components play a crucial role in transferring thermal energy from the reactor vessel to the turbine cooling system, facilitating the operation of the power plant.

Ensuring safety, reliability, and a high machining accuracy of 0.01mm, the manufacturing of steam generators demands advanced design and production capabilities.

MHI has a robust track record in the global nuclear power market, having supplied a total of 31 replacement steam generators to countries including France, Belgium, and the U.S., with 15 units specifically for EDF.

EDF, headquartered in Paris, operates 56 PWRs in France and is currently replacing existing steam generators in plants that began operations in the 1980s, aligning with the French government’s policy and considering operation extensions beyond 40 years.

Amidst increasing global demand for nuclear power in light of carbon neutrality and energy security, MHI remains committed to contributing to the safety and reliability of nuclear power on a global scale.

By delivering high-quality products to international markets, such as France, MHI aims to pass on its accumulated technological expertise as a nuclear power plant supplier to the next generation.

Onet Technologies, based in Marseille, has collaborated with MHI to provide specialized after-sales service and maintenance for nuclear power plant facilities since 2002.

MHI Group, a leading industrial conglomerate, operates in various sectors, including energy, smart infrastructure, industrial machinery, aerospace, and defense.

The group focuses on delivering innovative, integrated solutions to contribute to a carbon-neutral world, enhance quality of life, and ensure global safety. For more information, please visit www.mhi.com or follow insights and stories on spectra.mhi.com.
