Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) has recently criticized President Joe Biden for not pressuring Israel to yield to Hamas, a terrorist organization. In a video circulating on social media, she urged Democrats in Dearborn, Michigan, to vote against Biden in the upcoming primary races.
This move reflects growing dissatisfaction with the Biden administration among certain members of Congress and activists sympathetic to Hamas. During her speech, Tlaib urged supporters to vote uncommitted if they wanted their voices to be heard louder.
She emphasized the importance of creating a voting bloc to convey the message that they oppose countries supporting wars, bombs, and destruction and instead stand for supporting life. Tlaib’s speech seems targeted at raising awareness among those who oppose Israel and urging them not to remain invisible.
Tlaib’s choice to deliver this speech in Dearborn is significant, given the city’s large population of Muslim Americans who support the Palestinians. The anti-Israel sentiment in the community has led to protests, including one where students chanted “Allahu Akbar” in solidarity with Hamas after their attack on Israel.
Tlaib has faced criticism for her stance on Israel, waiting until after the IDF retaliated against Hamas to call for a ceasefire. She also faced a House vote for censure over her antisemitic remarks, which ultimately passed despite initial resistance.
While Tlaib’s call for voting against Biden may send a message to the administration, it’s unlikely to have a significant impact, considering Biden faces no serious primary challengers, and Dearborn voters are likely to support him in the general election.
