The Wheel of Time: Everything You Need To Know Before Release

The Wheel of Time

Based on the book series by Robert Jordan, Wheel of Time is a story set on an unnamed world, at a time period which, due to the cyclic nature of time, is both in the distant past and in the distant future. The story takes place about three thousand years after the “Breaking of the World,” which is said to have ended the “Age of Legends,” a time period in which the society was highly advanced.

Originally planned to have only six volumes, the series expanded up to fourteen volumes, in addition to which, there were a prequel novel and two companion books. While writing the twelfth and final book in the series in 2009, Robert Jordan passed away. Before his death, he made extensive notes regarding the book so that someone could take over the series. So, Brandon Sanderson, a long-time Wheel of Time fan and fantasy author, was brought in. During the writing process, it was decided that the final installment will be divided into three volumes due to the surplus of content.

The plot of The Wheel of Time Season 1

The main plot of the series revolves around Moiraine, who is a member of an all-female group called Aes Sedai. She sets off on an adventure in an attempt to find the Dragon Reborn, a prophesized figure who is foretold to save the world from the Dark One or be its doom. On her journey, she meets Rand al’Thor, a young man from Two Rivers who she thinks is the reincarnated Dragon.

Previously, Season 1 was rumored to be based on just the first book in the series, which was later contradicted by the showrunner, Rafe Judkins. In an interview, he revealed how the show is the adaptation of the entire series than just “Eye of the World” (first volume); therefore, it is bound to go beyond the first book.

Over the past year, the cast and crew of the show have been uploading the pictures of the script, thus revealing their titles. For those who like theorizing, they are as follows:

  • Episode 1: “Leavetaking”
  • Episode 2: “Shadow’s Waiting”
  • Episode 3: “A Place of Safety”
  • Episode 4: “The Dragon Reborn”
  • Episode 5: “Blood Calls Blood”
  • Episode 6: “The Flame of Tar Valon”

Season 1 Release Date

Announced back on October 2, 2018, The Wheel of Time series will be co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to be aired on Prime Video. In spite of the show being in production for quite a while and filming starting back in September 2019, there is yet no set a date for its release. Being listed in IMDb as premiering in 2021, there is enough proof to believe that will be so. The shoots for six of the eight episodes are done only halted by the pandemic in March. The production did resume in September before again being shut down. Despite the fact that there have been delays, the showrunner Rafe Judkins has reassured the fans that things were going well. Although the production is at a halt, it has given them plenty of time to work on the scripts and even plan out events for season 2.
