While using TikTok, you may have seen the term ‘BTA,’ which became popular after Super Bowl LIX. Here’s what it means.
On February 14, 2025, Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson yelled “BTA” during the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX celebration in Philadelphia, catching the attention of fans.
The term quickly spread on TikTok as users tried to figure out its meaning and why the football player used it during the celebration.
BTA stands for ‘Beat That A**’ or ‘Belt to A**.’ It refers to a controversial act where players use a belt or similar object to strike or spank their opponents, often as part of a celebration or ritual after a game.
The trend became popular on TikTok and other social media platforms, especially in high school sports, where teams have started copying or making fun of the action.
This trend first started getting attention in 2024. On September 12, user yoodeuce posted a video showing a football player swinging a belt in a locker room, set to the outro of a song called ‘Gettin’ Not Belt.’ The video received over 4 million views and 500,000 likes.
Soon after, TikToker 7gotgreathandss uploaded a meme of himself having a playful fight with the opposing team after trying to spank them with a towel during a game. This post gained 2.5 million views and over 300,000 likes.
The trend spread to other sports as well
For example, TikTok user shared a video of a softball team joining in, which got over 100,000 views.
Many users have raised concerns about the impact of the trend, especially for young athletes. Some argue that it encourages aggression, disrespect, and bad sportsmanship, which could negatively affect youth sports culture.

One viewer said, “The whole part of the handshake and good game at the end of the game is about good sportsmanship; this is like saying good game then spitting in their face.” Another commented, “I’m fighting a coach if someone does this to my kid.”
On the other hand, some people defend BTA as harmless fun or an exaggerated way of bonding with teammates. One person said, “Womp womp it’s just a game.” Another added, “This is great. Teach them not to lose again.”
However, the mixed reactions have led to warnings from parents and coaches, advising players not to copy the trend during games or practices. Whether seen as a fun meme or a concerning habit, BTA has sparked a lot of discussion on TikTok and beyond.
BTA has received criticism and punishment for those involved.
Not everyone sees the BTA trend as just a celebration after a game. Several players on the Willis High School football team in the Houston area were punished or suspended for participating in the BTA celebration after their 77-0 victory against Cleveland High School. According to one report, football teams in the Bay Area have taken steps to stop the BTA celebrations because the actions often lead to large fights.
