Cellar Door tells the story of a couple, Sera (Brewster) and John (Speedman), who try to start a new life in the suburbs after losing their baby through a miscarriage.
They have trouble finding a new home, but are invited to stay at Emmett’s gated house (Fishburne). Emmett asks them to stay for dinner and then overnight, but the next morning, they wake up to find him gone. Instead, they find a letter from Emmett saying that he has left the mansion to them, but with one rule: they must never open the cellar door.
John becomes obsessed with the cellar and learns that Emmett’s family disappeared from the house years ago. He also finds a strange list of previous residents and is warned about the house by a former tenant at a party. John grows more paranoid, wondering if the cellar hides some dark secrets.
At the same time, John faces problems with his colleague, Alyssa (Addison Timlin). It turns out that John had an affair with Alyssa and was with her the night Sera miscarried. Alyssa is in love with John and believes they should be together, so she starts causing trouble for him and making things difficult for him to hide from his wife.
Alyssa later shows up at John’s house uninvited when he’s not there and confronts Sera. Upset by what Alyssa says, Sera shoots her and decides to hide the body in the cellar.
When the police come to investigate, Sera lies and says that John was with her when Alyssa was killed. Later, Sera admits to John that she killed Alyssa but tells him to keep it a secret, threatening to blame the murder on him if he doesn’t agree.
The couple is forced to continue their life while dealing with the burden of the secrets they’ve kept.
Sera explains what happened
The day she found the way to the cellar, Alyssa was inside the house. Sera grabbed a gun and told Alyssa to leave, but Alyssa wouldn’t go. When Alyssa says Sera doesn’t deserve her life, Sera shoots and kills her.
Afterward, Sera wraps Alyssa’s body in plastic and throws it into the cellar. The person John chased in the car wasn’t Alyssa—it was Sera. Sera leaves the car in a remote spot, posts photos online, and emails her job asking for time off. Up to this point, no one knew the truth. But Sera forgot to remove one bullet from the wall, which John discovered. John couldn’t ignore it.
Sera knocks John out to stop him from opening the cellar door. After hearing Sera’s story, John wants to find her a lawyer and call the police. But Sera points a gun at him and offers two choices. The first: if John calls the police, Sera will kill him and make it look like John murdered Alyssa and attacked her, forcing Sera to shoot him in self-defense.

After Emmet gives them the key, the camera shows the cellar door surrounded by overgrown plants. People can interpret this in different ways. One idea is that Emmet messes with the owners’ minds. John’s fixation on opening the cellar door and Sera’s refusal, along with the secret about Alyssa, create tension in their marriage, pushing Sera to do terrible things to protect herself.
As the saying goes, “curiosity killed the cat”—Emmet appears to use this natural human urge to disturb his renters. When John and Sera finally open the cellar door, they find nothing inside, deepening the mystery.
But the emptiness makes them even more paranoid, since Sera already hid Alyssa’s body there, implying the only darkness in the cellar is what they brought themselves. It’s unclear if Emmet knows what they did, leaving the creepy question: how did he realize the cellar had been touched?
