Steve Rogers’ future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been uncertain for a long time, but Captain America: Brave New World may have finally hinted at what has happened to Chris Evans’ character.
Evans’ Captain America is one of the most important and well-loved characters in the MCU, with the actor appearing in at least one MCU movie every year from 2011 to 2019.
That final year marked the release of Avengers: Endgame, which seemed to conclude Captain America’s journey in the MCU. In the movie, Evans’ Steve became an old man and passed his shield on to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.
Mackie is now set to lead Captain America: Brave New World as the MCU’s new Captain America. After receiving Steve Rogers’ shield, Sam became the new Captain America at the end of Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The show, along with all MCU projects in the Multiverse Saga, never explained what happened to Evans’ version of Captain America. However, with the release of the first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World, it looks like Marvel may have finally suggested that Steve Rogers is really dead in the MCU, as many fans had assumed.
Steve Rogers’ Death Would Be A Major Event
One of the most interesting parts of the Captain America: Brave New World trailer was the quick glimpse of a funeral scene. It wasn’t just any funeral, as it appeared to be for someone with a military background, based on the military salute and the people attending.
Marvel may have dropped a hint that Captain America: Brave New World will not only show what happened to Steve Rogers, but it might also show the death of the MCU’s original Captain America. Since Steve was old in Avengers: Endgame, he could have passed away from natural causes with no villains involved.

However, there could be more to this. Captain America: Brave New World might not include Steve Rogers at all, and Marvel might have used the funeral scene in the trailer to mislead fans who would think of Steve.
The funeral could actually be for Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross. The trailer for Captain America: Brave New World confirmed that Red Hulk is in the film. In the comics, Ross faked his death after turning into Red Hulk. Since Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross was seen at the funeral in set photos, this theory seems more likely.
The MCU’s New Captain America Has Commented On It
Avengers: Endgame didn’t show Steve Rogers dying, as the old Captain America was seen talking to Sam Wilson, alive and well.
The movie ended with the younger Steve dancing slowly with Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter after traveling back in time to live his life with her. Since then, no MCU movie has shown Steve Rogers or explained his death offscreen.
Anthony Mackie, who plays the new Captain America, was asked last year on Jimmy Kimmel Live! about Steve Rogers’ status in the MCU.
Mackie was questioned if Steve Rogers was dead in the MCU. He denied it, saying, “I mean, he ain’t dead… Why you trying to kill Steve? That’s age discrimination.”
Based on Mackie’s comments and the fact that Steve would deserve a big death scene in the MCU, it seems likely that Steve Rogers is still alive by the time Captain America: Brave New World happens. Whether Evans appears as old Steve Rogers in a cameo or not, a major funeral scene for the hero would make sense if Rogers were to die.
The World Thinks Steve Rogers Is Dead
The first MCU movie after Avengers: Endgame was Spider-Man: Far From Home, which acted as an epilogue for the Infinity Saga.

While the main Avenger connected to the movie was Iron Man, because of his mentor relationship with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America appeared in an interesting scene. At the beginning of the film, a news report from Midtown High News showed a tribute to the Avengers who died fighting Thanos, which included Steve Rogers.
While Mackie hinted that Rogers is still alive going into Captain America: Brave New World, the scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home suggests that the world believes Steve Rogers died along with Iron Man, Black Widow, and Vision in the fight against Thanos.
Based on this, the idea that someone else is the cause of the funeral in Captain America: Brave New World makes sense. However, it could also be a special ceremony after Steve’s real death, kept secret among high-level government/military people and Steve’s loved ones.
