The Heartbreak Kid Review

The Heartbreak Kid is an adequately enough comedy, with a decent portion of laughs. Senseless/outrageous sight gags are especially copious. Yet, the film can’t be judged on simply its benefits since it’s a remake. While the Farrellys have changed their version of the movie enough to make it unique, they decided not to change the title – – and perhaps they ought to have because their film simply doesn’t compare to the 1972 rendition.

An essential scene where the husband breaks off with his new wife – – which put the heartbreak in the first film – – lacks the punch here, weakened with one more gag. And keep in mind that May’s film closes on a thoughtful, almost painful note that promptly shifts everything that came before it into brilliance; the Farrellys simply attempt to get away with another joke (as bitter as it may be). The new Heartbreak Kid has Stiller, who rises to the situation again, never exaggerating a scene; the same is true for his father, Jerry Stiller, who plays Eddie’s pervy-however supported dad in the film. Still, the Stillers alone aren’t to the point of floating this movie to There’s Something About Mary significance.
