Many of you would not know that John A Kuri’s Conagher is adapted from a novel of the same name. In 1969 the American novelist Louis Dearborn L’Amour wrote the novel that centered around an honest, hardworking Cowboy Conn Conagher. The Film, however was released in 1991 and directed by Reynaldo Villalobos. The plot primitively followed a family that moved to the Indian territory for a better living. As the plot expands, we encounter Conhager’s adventures and Evie’s love for him. There is this storyline, and then there are the great open spaces of the West where you can hear the wind in the grass and cedars.

The Buckskin Joe Frontier Town

Mainly it was filmed at the Royal Gorge, which is a canyon of the Arkansas River located west of Canon City. Out of the many beautiful locations where Conagher was filmed, the major one is Buckskin Joe Frontier Town and Railway. It was basically a movie set that consisted of a theme park and railway. The set is a replica of the original town and town of Buckskin Joe and was recreated in 1950. Located at 1193 Fremont County Road 3A, Canon City, Colorado, USA  has been used as a backdrop for many other movies. Some of them are The Sacketts(1979), the adventure drama True Grit(1969), and The Cowboys(1972). Moreover, 1962’s American epic western adventure film How the West was won has also some scenes shot in this town. More than half of the scenes in Conagher were set in the forests of the USA.

The next two on the list are Kaibab National Forest as well as Coconino National Forest. While both of them lie in Arizona, USA, their diverse environment serves as a suitable filming location for various adventure films from the 90s. Besides Conagher, some of the other classic productions set here are Bad Jim(1990) and Red Canyon(1949). Just like them, another National park where Conagher was filmed is the Prescott National Forest, also in Arizona, USA. Spread across 1.25 million acres, it is a beautiful part of the state and an ideal location for Western adventure films. In addition to the shooting, the forest is open for tourists as well. Now talking about the next few places, the city of Cottonwood in Arizona had some scenes filmed in and around it as well.

What is Conagher about?

The storyline opens up in a wagon where the Teale family is moving into the Indian Territory. Evie’s husband goes to get the cattle but never returns back as he gets killed on his way. She is left to raise her two children all alone. In order to feed her children, she starts working for a stagecoach where she comes to know about the fierce gunfighter Conn Conagher. However, on her encounter with him, she happens to grow fond of him. While Conagher reciprocates the same, he chases tumbleweeds for the anonymous poems that are tied to them. In the end, he comes to know that the anonymous writer was none other than Evie. Amidst all the adventure and fighting scenes as the story concludes, we witness the most awaited kiss. The romance playoff almost took the whole film, but it was worth it in the end.

Cast and Crew Details

Sam Elliot and Katherine Ross in Conagher

Sam Elliot was the executive producer as well as starred in the American western film. Barry Corbin portrayed the character of Charlie McCloud, the stage driver, while Sam Elliot himself played the protagonist Conn Conagher. Elliot won a few nominations for his portrayal at the Golden Globe awards. Nevertheless, Barry Corbin won the Western Heritage award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame for his performance in the Television film. Katherine Ross, who is Elliot’s wife, played the character of Mrs. Evie Teale, while Gavan O’Herlihy played Cris Mahler the Cowboy. The supporting cast included Billy Bush as Jacob Teale, Paul Koslo as Kiowa Staples, Daniel Quinn as Johnny McGivern, and Buck Taylor as Tile Coker.
