England Win First Test Against NZ: McCullum vs the Kiwis

England got a win in the first Test match against NZ. The game was over by the fourth day. It took a hundred from former captain Joe Root to register the win. Furthermore, the luck also favored the hosts on the final day of the Test. The match took place at the iconic Lord’s stadium in London. It marked the beginning of McCullum as England’s head coach in the format.

Moreover, he was up against his former side NZ. Notably, McCullum captained NZ from 2012 to 2016. He holds the fastest ton record in Test cricket. He achieved the feat in his last Test for the Black Caps.

Also, England is now under new captain Ben Stokes. He also took charge in his first match in his new role. However, it took a hundred from former captain Joe Root for England to register a win in the first Test. Joe Root is now the joint quickest playing to score 10k runs in Tests. Besides, he now stands as the only English cricketer to score 17k runs in international cricket.

England register a win in the first Test: The match at a glance!

Both sides were having a disappointing run of forms coming into the match. NZ is the current World Test champion. But they have been denied a series win in several Test matches ever since. Besides, England could only manage one win in their last 17 games. However, the home side was looking for a fresh start under new leaders. And things did go as per plan.

In the first innings, NZ put 132 runs on the board. However, they restricted England to just 141 runs in their first innings. They then set a target of 277 for England to get a win in the first Test. And the home team did that in style.

However, the 4th innings was a shaky start for England. They were down 69 for four at one point. Soon after, Stokes found himself walking back to the dugout. However, luck favored the home team as the bowler bowled a no-ball. It was the Joe Root show from then on. His unbeaten 115 gave England the win. Reactions have been pouring in in praise of the knock.
