Glen Mazzara revealed his reasons for quitting the AMC series. At the annual National Association of Television Program Executives Conference, Mazzara admitted that he never had complete control over the popular zombie drama during a panel discussion.
In December, AMC announced that it had picked up “The Walking Dead” for a fourth season and that Mazzara would not serve as showrunner again. Frank Darabont, the show’s creator, departed in the early Season 2 episode, and Mazzara took over as showrunner.
After Season 3, Mazzara announced in a statement, “It’s time to move on. My time as showrunner on ‘The Walking Dead has been a great experience.” “I have communicated with our followers on a level I could never have anticipated while telling the story I wanted to tell. There are few things better than that. We value your involvement in this journey.”
However, information immediately spread that Mazzara had been forced out by Robert Kirkman, the author, and co-creator of the Image Comics series that served as the inspiration for the AMC series.
Mazzara claimed to have received feedback on screenplays from the network, producers, and even performers. “He said, “You won’t be able to take all the notes.” There is no way to win over everyone. In order to integrate all of those diverse voices and opinions, I would simply go through and rewrite the entire script. But ultimately, you’re never going to reach an agreement. I must thus state, “I feel that this is the greatest script that can be written,” at that point. Someone needs to make the decision at the end of the day. Otherwise, anarchy reigns.”
