Even though the conditions were challenging due to the risky mountainous terrain, the search efforts continued for more than five months. The search comprised more than 200 volunteers, including rescue teams and experienced mountaineers.
Moreover, helicopters, drones, and K-9 units were also used to boost search efforts for Sands. But until June 24, 2023, when hikers discovered human remains in the region where Sands had been hiking, no indication of Sands was ever located.

Later it came to light that the remains found in the Southern California mountains were those of Julian Sands. According to a San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department statement, the body found on Mt. Baldy on June 24, 2023, has been positively identified as a North Hollywood resident, 65-year-old Julian Sands. Without further test results, the cause of death is still being investigated.
