Matthew Perry, the beloved star of the iconic ’90s TV series “Friends,” has passed away at the age of 54, as confirmed by a representative for the actor and law enforcement officials to NBC News. Perry was discovered at his residence in Pacific Palisades, and the circumstances appear to be related to drowning.
The exact cause of his death remains undetermined, and according to two law enforcement officers speaking to NBC News, it is currently under investigation, signifying that the coroner’s office will likely handle the case and there are no apparent indications of foul play.
Matthew Perry gained widespread fame for his role as Chandler Bing in “Friends,” a comedy series that captivated audiences for ten seasons, running from 1994 to 2004. His portrayal of Chandler was a beloved part of the show’s ensemble of six best friends living in New York City.

Beyond his time on “Friends,” Perry also graced other successful shows like “Boys Will Be Boys,” “Growing Pains,” “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “The West Wing,” and “Scrubs,” among others.
Perry had been candid about his ongoing struggle with substance abuse and alcohol throughout his career. In 2019, he faced a near-death experience when his colon ruptured due to opioid overuse, as recounted in his memoir. He underwent a critical seven-hour surgical procedure, and at the time, his chances of survival were merely 2%.
While he survived the operation, Perry endured a two-week coma followed by a five-month hospitalization. Subsequently, he underwent at least 14 additional surgeries, as documented in his book. In his memoir, he shared his challenges with addiction, including spending more than $7 million in his quest for sobriety and attending rehab on at least 15 occasions.
“I’ve been in a mental institution, gone to therapy twice a week for thirty years, been to death’s door,” Perry wrote, revealing the extent of his struggles.
Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in from friends and colleagues. Maggie Wheeler, who portrayed Perry’s character’s on-and-off girlfriend on “Friends,” praised him as an “incredibly generous actor” and highlighted his unparalleled comedic timing, even during his most challenging moments.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a former schoolmate of Perry, shared his shock at the news, recalling their schoolyard memories and praising Perry’s ability to bring joy to people worldwide.
