Hayley Erbert, wife of Derek Hough, underwent emergency brain surgery following a cranial hematoma, as disclosed by Hough in a recent Instagram post. The incident unfolded after Wednesday night’s performance on the Symphony of Dance tour, leading to Erbert’s hospitalization in Washington, D.C.
Hough revealed that Erbert, experiencing disorientation, was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma resulting from a ruptured blood vessel, necessitating an emergency craniectomy. Fortunately, she is currently in stable condition.
According to information from the Mayo Clinic, an intracranial hematoma involves a collection of blood within the skull, often caused by the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain. Traumatic events such as falls or car accidents can precipitate this condition, which is considered life-threatening and demands prompt medical attention.
The University of Rochester Medical Center explains that a craniectomy involves removing a portion of the skull to alleviate pressure on the brain, typically performed in cases of severe brain injuries with significant bleeding or excessive swelling.
While Hough did not provide details regarding the cause of Erbert’s injury, last year, the couple experienced a “pretty scary car accident in the mountains,” as described by Erbert. She emerged with minor injuries, including a swollen face and four stitches above her eyebrow.
Expressing her hopes for a healthy and injury-free 2023, Erbert had previously written, “I’m manifesting that 2023 is a year of health and strength” following the 2022 incident.
Xochitl Gomez, the recent winner of “Dancing With the Stars,” extended well wishes to Erbert, describing her as a “shining light” in a supportive Instagram comment on Thursday.
Hough and Erbert, who tied the knot in late August, embarked on their tour approximately a month after their marriage.
