The Republican National Committee (RNC) is preparing to present a draft resolution positioning Donald Trump as the presumptive nominee for the party’s 2024 presidential candidacy.
Despite Nikki Haley remaining an active contender, the RNC’s move is perceived by The Daily Beast as premature. Haley, who shows no inclination to abandon her campaign, is noted for surpassing Trump in merchandise sales with her “Barred. Permanently” t-shirts.
As reported by The Dispatch on Thursday, the initiative is spearheaded by David Bossie, an RNC committeeman from Maryland and a close ally of Trump.
If the draft resolution gains approval, potentially as early as the upcoming RNC winter meeting in Las Vegas, it could set in motion a proactive approach by the national party, treating Trump as if he has already secured the required 1,215 nominating convention delegates under current RNC rules.
A crucial excerpt from the draft resolution reads, “RESOLVED that the Republican National Committee hereby declares President Trump as our presumptive 2024 nominee for the office of President of the United States and from this moment forward moves into full general election mode welcoming supporters of all candidates as valued members of Team Trump 2024.”
In response to this development, Olivia Perez-Cubas, a spokeswoman for the Haley campaign, dismissed the significance of the RNC’s stance, stating, “Who cares what the RNC says? We’ll let millions of Republican voters across the country decide who should be our party’s nominee, not a bunch of Washington insiders.”
Trump, commenting on Truth Social, acknowledged the RNC’s desire to declare him the presumptive nominee but urged against it for the sake of party unity. He proposed following the “Old Fashioned” way and completing the process at the ballot box. Trump expressed gratitude to the RNC for their respect and devotion, signing off with “TRUMP2024.”
