Qatar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Addresses Objective of Achieving Peaceful Resolution amid Escalating Tensions in the Middle East

Qatari foreign affairs minister discusses goal of finding peaceful solution to rising tension in Middle East

Fox News anchor Bret Baier recently conducted an interview with Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, addressing the escalating tensions in the Middle East and Qatar’s efforts in de-escalation.

Al Thani consistently avoided attributing blame to Iran for funding groups like Hamas and the Houthis, emphasizing Qatar’s commitment to mediation and conflict containment. He highlighted Qatar’s involvement in peace talks, including those with the Taliban, Ukraine and Russia, and Hamas and Israel.

Regarding reports of a ceasefire proposal in Gaza and the return of hostages, Al Thani expressed caution, stating that the process was premature and negotiations were ongoing. The release of hostages was discussed, with a focus on categories like women, elderly, and healthy individuals. Al Thani emphasized Qatar’s strong relationship with the U.S. and the role such alliances play in restoring regional stability.

When asked about the events on October 7, Al Thani condemned atrocities against civilians, emphasizing the need to end the war, reunite hostages with their families, and prevent similar conflicts. He stressed the importance of negotiations over military action to achieve desired results.

Al Thani expressed concerns about the Middle East situation, particularly since the Gaza war began, fearing its potential spillover and exploitation by other forces in the region. He conveyed condolences for the loss of lives and emphasized the need to avoid provocations and focus on diplomatic solutions.

Regarding blame on Tehran, Al Thani refrained from engaging in a blame game, emphasizing open communication with Iran and encouraging de-escalation. When presented with Robert Bryant’s opinion on Iran’s influence over certain groups, Al Thani focused on judging actions rather than opinions.

Addressing an article that labeled Qatar as an “enabler” of Iran, Al Thani defended Qatar’s relationship with Iran based on common interests and good neighborhoods. On potential U.S. retaliation against attacks on troops, he advocated for diplomacy and a measured approach.

In conclusion, Al Thani expressed concern about the escalating situation, emphasizing the need to find a solution and bring closure to the Gaza situation to prevent a larger conflict in the region.
