On January 31, The Telegraph reported that the Duke of Edinburgh, aged 59, is taking a brief break following his recent overseas visits to South Africa and St. Helena, both Commonwealth countries. During his travels, Edward had the opportunity to greet the same 192-year-old tortoise that his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, met during her 1947 visit as a princess.
Edward is set to make his next public appearance on February 8. As per the Royal Diary, he is scheduled to attend a reception at the Institute of Physics and a talent showcase at The Savoy in his capacity as the patron of the Production Guild of Great Britain.
This hiatus coincides with the recovery periods of King Charles III and Princess Kate Middleton, who underwent planned surgeries. Kensington Palace disclosed that the 42-year-old Princess of Wales had an abdominal procedure at The London Clinic, and the statement indicated a successful surgery with an expected hospital stay of ten to fourteen days.

It was also noted that based on medical advice, her return to public duties was unlikely until after Easter. Consequently, Prince William, Kate’s husband, canceled two overseas appearances to be by her side during her recovery.
On the same day as Kate’s surgery announcement, it was revealed that Charles, aged 75, would undergo surgery the following week. Buckingham Palace clarified that the King sought treatment for an enlarged prostate, a benign condition, and would undergo a corrective procedure the next week. Charles’ public engagements were postponed for a brief period of recuperation.
Following a successful surgery, Charles was discharged from the hospital. Entertainment Tonight reported on January 19 that the monarch would be working from home on paperwork as he continued his recovery.
