In recent years, it has been customary for the Super Bowl festivities to feature some level of participation from the sitting president, typically in the form of a brief interview.
However, this tradition appears to be wavering. Last year, unsuccessful negotiations with Fox, the network hosting the game, led to President Biden abstaining from participation. This trend continues as he opts out once again this year.
Variety reports that President Biden will not engage in an interview during the pre-game activities leading up to the CBS broadcast of Super Bowl LVIII on February 11. The network had been in talks with the White House in the preceding weeks, extending an invitation that the President has declined.
White House spokesman Ben LaBolt addressed the President’s decision, stating, “We hope viewers enjoy watching what they tuned in for — the game.” However, Variety emphasizes the timing’s awkwardness, as voters may have been particularly keen on hearing from President Biden in this election year.
