The U.S. Coast Guard issued a plea to mariners on Friday, seeking assistance in locating a 60-year-old man who embarked on a sailing journey from California to Hawaii.
Noel Rubio set sail from Long Beach on Dec. 28 aboard the 32-foot (9.7-meter) sailboat named Malulani, according to a news release from the Coast Guard. His intended destination was Kaneohe on the island of Oahu, with an expected arrival three weeks after departure.
The last known communication from Rubio occurred on Dec. 28th when he used his cellphone south of Catalina Island in California. Despite extensive efforts, the Coast Guard has been unable to locate him through searches in harbors across California, Hawaii, and Mexico, along with urgent marine information broadcasts.
Rubio’s sole means of communication on the Malulani is a VHF-FM marine band radio. In response to the situation, the Coast Guard is urging individuals to report any information or sightings of the vessel or Rubio to the rescue and coordination centers in Alameda, California, or Honolulu.
The Coast Guard emphasizes the importance of mariners crossing the open ocean to carry multiple communication tools, including radios, satellite communication devices, and electronic position radio beacons. These precautions facilitate authorities in locating and aiding individuals in need of rescue.
