Less than a year following King Charles III’s ascension to the throne, Buckingham Palace disclosed a significant health revelation. According to a statement released by the palace on Monday (Feb. 5), the son of the late Queen Elizabeth II has been diagnosed with cancer.
“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” the statement conveyed, as reported by NBC News.
Although Buckingham Palace refuted claims that King Charles was suffering from prostate cancer, they did not specify the particular variant of the disease. Furthermore, details regarding the stage of the cancer were withheld.
Presently, the King has commenced a “schedule of regular treatments.” As per medical advice, he will be “postponing public-facing duties.” Reports indicate that he will undergo outpatient care in London.
King Charles assumed the throne last May, following the passing of his mother in September 2022 at the age of 96. This year was anticipated to mark the first full year of King Charles and Queen Camilla’s reign.
It remains uncertain if the Queen’s public engagements will also be suspended during this period or if she will act as his proxy.
The decision to disclose the King’s cancer diagnosis was aimed at dispelling rumors about his health, as indicated by Buckingham Palace’s statement. Additionally, the Royal expressed a desire to enhance public understanding of those worldwide affected by cancer.
This update follows medical procedures undergone by King Charles and Princess Kate in January. Both received treatment at a private London clinic. Princess Kate underwent planned abdominal surgery and was hospitalized for approximately two weeks thereafter.
In contrast, King Charles underwent a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate. It’s noteworthy that the Royal is 75 years old.
“The King is appreciative of his medical team’s prompt intervention, facilitated by his recent hospital procedure. He remains optimistic about his treatment and eagerly anticipates resuming full public duties at the earliest opportunity.”
