Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley didn’t shy away from blaming her competitor, former President Donald Trump, for a series of setbacks faced by the GOP.
Speaking to a crowd in Newberry, South Carolina, Haley remarked that “Republicans had a really bad day,” attributing the challenges to Trump. She emphasized that chaos seems to follow him and suggested that he had a hand in the recent GOP losses.
Haley specifically pointed to the failure of the House Republicans’ vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the unsuccessful GOP-backed Israel funding bill, and a federal appeals panel ruling that Trump is not immune to charges related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
She expressed concern about the possibility of enduring “four more years of chaos” and argued that the country couldn’t survive it.
Addressing rumors of tension between Trump and Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, Haley included McDaniel’s potential post-South Carolina primary exit in her list of Republican losses. The GOP primary in South Carolina is scheduled for February 24.
Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, continued her critique by taking aim at President Joe Biden. She referred to a special counsel report describing Biden as a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
Biden’s attorneys criticized the report’s “highly prejudicial language,” while Biden himself vehemently rejected the claims, asserting that his memory is fine.
In her speech, Haley didn’t just focus on Trump but also reiterated her call for mental competency tests for politicians, a stance she has maintained throughout her presidential campaign.
As South Carolinians prepare for the GOP primary, with early voting starting on February 24, Haley’s events in the state underscore her efforts to connect with voters and navigate the complexities within the party.
