Not Even Questions About Biden’s Mental Fitness Can Shake His Hold Over Democrats

One week after concerns arose about Joe Biden’s age and mental sharpness, his firm grip on the Democratic Party’s leadership is more evident than ever.

Despite recent events, including a special counsel report portraying Biden as elderly and forgetful and a news conference where he confused the leaders of Mexico and Egypt, most Democrats remain staunchly supportive of his candidacy.

Interviews with donors, strategists, and lawmakers revealed that few were shaken by the special counsel report’s portrayal of Biden. One Democrat, speaking anonymously, likened the situation to a slow-motion train wreck. However, Democrats are resolute in their commitment to Biden’s candidacy despite the challenges of the past week.

Their resolve was reinforced by Donald Trump, who shifted attention away from Biden’s issues with another controversial statement.

Trump’s remarks, suggesting he would support Russia in its dealings with NATO allies, refocused attention on Biden’s opponent and highlighted the argument for a second Biden term: that while he may be old and occasionally forgetful, Trump represents a chaotic figure threatening American democracy and global stability.

Nevertheless, age remains Biden’s greatest liability in the November election. He is already the oldest president in U.S. history and would be 86 at the end of a second term.

Each misstep risks alienating voters, particularly those disengaged from politics, whom Biden’s campaign aides believe he needs to win over to keep Trump out of office.

Despite concerns, Democrats continue to support Biden, seeing him as the best option compared to Trump. Progressives, moderates, and state and local officials across swing states have signaled their backing for the president.

While Biden’s age is a significant concern for Democrats, they believe the election will ultimately focus on Trump’s presidency. Democratic officials and strategists acknowledge the high stakes of supporting Biden against Trump, given voter concerns about his age.

Some Democrats worry about polls showing greater voter concern about Biden’s fitness compared to Trump’s missteps. However, they believe the race will evolve into a referendum on Trump.

Democratic officials with future White House ambitions have rallied around Biden instead of seeking to replace him, fearing backlash from the party’s leadership. Vice President Kamala Harris and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker have expressed support for Biden.

Despite worries about the race, Biden’s campaign has focused on using humor to deflect criticism. Biden himself has joked about his age, showing a willingness to address concerns with levity.

While concerns about Biden’s age persist, Democrats remain committed to his candidacy, viewing him as the best choice to counter Trump’s presidency. They believe the election will ultimately focus on Trump’s record, overshadowing concerns about Biden’s age and abilities.
