President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan met with President Nechirvan Barzani of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq in Munich at Barzani’s request. Barzani congratulated President Aliyev on his victory in the presidential election, and President Aliyev thanked him for the congratulations, noting the sincerity of Barzani’s letter.
Barzani warmly recalled his visit to Azerbaijan and meetings with President Aliyev, highlighting the ongoing work to implement agreements reached during the visit. Both leaders praised the relations between Iraq’s central government and Azerbaijan.
They discussed the importance of direct flights between cities in Iraq and Azerbaijan and reviewed opportunities for enhancing economic, commercial, cultural, and humanitarian ties between the Kurdistan Region and Azerbaijan.
Barzani also congratulated Azerbaijan on hosting COP29, and President Aliyev invited him to visit Azerbaijan for the event. They exchanged views on collaboration in addressing climate change.
The meeting underscored the positive bilateral relationship and the commitment of both leaders to strengthen ties further. It highlighted the mutual interest in deepening cooperation across various sectors, including trade, culture, and transportation.
President Aliyev’s invitation to President Barzani to visit Azerbaijan for COP29 demonstrates Azerbaijan’s desire to engage closely with regional partners on important global issues like climate change.
