A tragic incident unfolded in Sterling, Virginia, as an underground propane tank caused a devastating explosion at a residence, resulting in the death of a firefighter and injuries to several others.

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue responded to a call about a gas leak at the home, and upon arrival, the propane leak had already permeated the residence.

The underground propane tank, holding 500 gallons, was found to be the source of the leak. Firefighters were inside the home working to address the situation when the explosion occurred.

The blast resulted in extensive damage, described as “total devastation,” with debris scattered into the street and neighboring homes.

Initially, authorities reported that nine firefighters suffered injuries, ranging from serious to less severe. However, updated information indicated that at least 10 people, including two occupants of the home with minor injuries, were affected. Four first responders remain hospitalized.

The tragic loss of a firefighter, Trevor Brown, 45, from the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company, has left the community mourning. Loudoun County Fire and Rescue expressed condolences to Brown’s family and urged respect for their privacy during this difficult time.

The investigation into the explosion is ongoing, with officials noting that the cause is not yet fully determined. While it is assumed to be propane-related, a comprehensive examination is underway.

The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation, with support from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Utility Washington Gas also played a role in the investigation.

The incident has shaken the community of Sterling, a town in Loudoun County with around 30,000 residents. The aftermath of the explosion underscores the challenges faced by first responders and the inherent risks associated with emergency situations involving hazardous materials like propane.

As investigations progress, the focus remains on understanding the circumstances leading to the tragic incident and ensuring the safety of the community moving forward.
