Actor Michael J. Fox made a surprise appearance at the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, receiving a heartwarming standing ovation from the audience. Despite his battle with Parkinson’s disease, Fox was welcomed to the stage with enthusiastic applause and support.
Introduced by BAFTAs host David Tennant as a “true legend of cinema,” Fox, known for his iconic role in “Back to the Future,” was visibly moved by the warm reception as he made his way to the stage in a wheelchair. However, the applause only intensified when he rose to the microphone.
In his speech, Fox highlighted the power of cinema to unite people from all walks of life. “No matter who you are or where you’re from, these films can bring us together,” he said.
“There’s a reason why they say movies are magic, ’cause movies can change your day, they change your outlook, it can sometimes even change your life.”
The actor then presented the award for best film to Christopher Nolan and his team for “Oppenheimer” – an epic centered around the development of the atomic bomb.
Notably, Fox’s journey with Parkinson’s was also recognized at the BAFTAs, as the documentary “Still,” which explores his experiences with the disease, was nominated for best documentary.
Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991 at the age of 29, Fox has been candid about his struggles with the neurological disorder. In a recent interview with Variety, he shared about the mental health challenges and injuries he has faced as a result of Parkinson’s. However, despite the difficulties, Fox maintains a hopeful outlook.
“I recognize how hard this is for people, and I recognize how hard it is for me,” he said. “But I have a certain set of skills that allow me to deal with this stuff.
And I realized, with gratitude, optimism is sustainable. And if you can find something to be grateful for, then you can find something to look forward to, and you carry on.”
Fox’s resilience and positive attitude continue to inspire many, serving as a reminder of the power of hope and gratitude in the face of adversity.
