A substantial recall has been issued for approximately 16.8 million Toshiba laptop AC adapters distributed across the United States and Canada.
This decision follows numerous instances of overheating and fires associated with the product, resulting in several minor burn injuries, as reported by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Wednesday.
The recall encompasses AC adapters sold individually and bundled with Toshiba brand personal laptop computers, both in retail outlets nationwide and through Toshiba.com, during the period spanning from April 2008 to April 2014.
These adapters were retailed for prices ranging between $25 and $75. Dynabook Americas Inc., headquartered in Irvine, California, formerly known as Toshiba PC Company, has facilitated the recall.
Manufactured in China, the imported adapters have demonstrated a propensity to overheat and emit sparks, posing a significant risk of burns and fires.
The company has received 679 reports detailing instances of the adapters igniting, melting, and causing burns, along with 43 reports of minor burn injuries.
Consumers who have purchased the affected adapters are urged to discontinue their use immediately and reach out to Dynabook for a complimentary replacement.
The recall extends to over 60 model numbers, and individuals can verify if they possess one of the recalled adapters through specific online portals provided by the company.
To obtain a free replacement, consumers must follow a specific process, which includes submitting a photograph of their AC adapter with the power cord severed and ensuring proper disposal. This documentation should be sent to [email protected].
The recall encompasses approximately 15.5 million adapters sold in the United States and an additional 1.3 million in Canada. The safety and well-being of consumers remain paramount, prompting the proactive measures taken by Dynabook Americas Inc. to address this critical issue and prevent potential harm associated with the use of the recalled Toshiba laptop AC adapters.
