Disability Rights New Jersey, an advocacy group for individuals with disabilities, has initiated legal action against New Jersey officials, alleging severe conditions and widespread violations of patient rights within four state-operated psychiatric hospitals.
In a lawsuit filed in federal court, Disability Rights New Jersey contends that conditions within Ancora Psychiatric Hospital, Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital, Trenton Psychiatric Hospital, and Ann Klein Forensic Center resemble “psychiatric incarceration” rather than environments conducive to proper patient care.
The 99-page complaint outlines disturbing incidents of sexual, physical, and emotional assaults suffered by patients, some resulting in permanent injuries or fatalities.
The lawsuit targets state Human Services Commissioner Sarah Adelman, acting Health Commissioner Kaitlan Baston, and the state itself as defendants for failing to address these systemic issues.
Disability Rights New Jersey seeks comprehensive reforms, including enhanced security measures, improved discharge planning, and support services to facilitate patients’ reintegration into the community.
Additionally, the lawsuit calls for the establishment of a stakeholder advisory group to oversee the system and proposes monetary penalties if the state fails to implement necessary changes.
Officials from the New Jersey Departments of Human Services and Health declined to comment on the ongoing litigation when contacted on Wednesday. The lawsuit underscores the urgent need for reforms to safeguard the well-being and rights of individuals receiving psychiatric care in state-run facilities.
