Former President Donald Trump addressed a convention of religious broadcasters with a promise to defend Christian values and safeguard the faith’s symbols, emphasizing his commitment to protecting crosses from what he described as the threats posed by the left.
Speaking at the National Religious Broadcasters International Christian Media Convention in Nashville, Trump warned against the efforts of the radical left to undermine religious freedoms, drawing parallels with historical attempts by communist and fascist regimes to suppress or control churches.
In a passionate speech to hundreds of attendees, Trump asserted, “Remember, every communist regime throughout history has tried to stamp out the churches, just like every fascist regime has tried to co-opt them and control them. And, in America, the radical left is trying to do both.”
He rallied the crowd, expressing his determination to prevent any desecration of Christian symbols under his administration, stating, “But no one will be touching the cross of Christ under the Trump administration, I swear to you.”
Trump’s pledge to protect Christian symbolism echoes his previous assurances to other groups, such as his vow to defend gun rights made to the National Rifle Association. This commitment aligns with the growing calls from leading conservatives for Trump to center his potential second term around Christian values.
As the Republican primary narrows down to Trump and his former ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, the convention provided a receptive audience for Trump’s message. Amidst an atmosphere reminiscent of a rally, Trump criticized the left’s attempts to shame Christians and emphasized his pride in his Christian identity.
Throughout his speech, Trump highlighted his achievements, particularly in the realm of abortion policy, including his appointments to the Supreme Court. However, he notably omitted any reference to the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling impacting in vitro fertilization.
In response to Trump’s address, President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign issued a statement drawing attention to Trump’s silence on the Alabama IVF ruling, which they attributed to his responsibility for the matter.
Looking ahead to the upcoming election, Trump expressed confidence in his support base and predicted a surge in enthusiasm compared to previous elections. With the Tennessee primary approaching on Super Tuesday, Trump stands poised to solidify his position as the Republican nominee.
Despite initial skepticism from some religious leaders due to his personal history, Trump has garnered strong support from the religious community, who view him as a champion of their values.
According to Troy Miller, president and CEO of the National Religious Broadcasters, Trump’s ability to connect with ordinary Americans has endeared him to many within the religious community, despite the controversies surrounding his past.
Trump’s speech at the National Religious Broadcasters convention underscored his commitment to defending Christian values and symbols, resonating with his base as he gears up for the upcoming election.
