Did Marjorie Taylor Greene Really Say New York Judge Arthur Engoron Should Lose His Job? Check Out the Tweet

Fact Check: Marjorie Taylor Greene Reportedly Posted That NY Judge Arthur Engoron ‘Should Be Disrobed.’ We’ve Got the Tweet

On February 22, 2024, a screenshot circulated among users on X, depicting a post attributed to U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump. In the post, Greene allegedly advocated for the removal of a judge involved in a case concerning Trump, using the term “disrobed.”

According to Merriam-Webster.com, “disrobe” means “to take off one’s clothing,” while Cambridge.org provides a slightly nuanced definition, indicating it as “to remove clothes, particularly outer or ceremonial attire.”

This post, archived for verification, originated from Greene’s official account, debunking any speculation of it being a fabricated tweet, a common occurrence on social media platforms. In the message, Greene misspelled the judge’s name and asserted, “Judge Engeron should be disrobed and thrown out, he’s a disgrace!!”

The post targeted Judge Arthur Engoron of the New York State Supreme Court, who recently ruled that Trump must pay substantial fines and interest for misleading financial statements during a civil fraud trial.

Despite attempts to reach Greene for clarification via direct message on X, no response was received prior to publication.

Following the trending of “disrobed” on the platform, users on X engaged in discussions about the post. Some speculated that Greene might have intended to suggest disbarment for Judge Engoron, meaning expulsion from the legal profession.

There were suggestions from at least one user on X that Greene’s apparent misuse of “disrobed” could have been deliberate, part of a strategy to garner attention, a tactic perceived as consistent with her previous actions.

Previous reports from Snopes highlighted other instances where Greene was purported to have confused terms, such as mistaking “Antenna” for a country, mentioning “Nancy Pelosi’s gazpacho police,” referring to Guam as a foreign nation, and stating, “We all want Earth to be the best planet in the world.”
