It has now been over a year since Nikki Haley officially entered the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Despite facing a setback with a loss to “None of These Candidates” in Nevada, the former South Carolina governor remains undeterred.
Desi Lydic, serving as guest host on The Daily Show, expresses her satisfaction at Haley’s persistence, noting that regardless of one’s political stance, Haley’s ability to irk Donald Trump is noteworthy. “Because even if you don’t agree with her politics, she still really pisses Donald Trump off. And that’s a beautiful thing,” Lydic remarks.
However, Lydic finds it puzzling that Haley is being characterized as a “moderate” Republican when she herself consistently emphasizes her conservative principles. Despite this, Haley’s policies bear a striking resemblance to those of Trump, leading Lydic to question the validity of the “moderate” label.
Lydic suggests that the confusion may stem from Haley’s demeanor, pointing out that she is notably more composed compared to the bombastic style of Trump. “She’s certainly the only candidate speaking at a moderate volume. You’ve got Trump screaming so loud, A&T satellites are exploding… Just using a proper inside voice is going to seem like a breath of fresh air,” Lydic quips.
However, Lydic observes a concerning trend: Republicans who acknowledge Joe Biden as the legitimately elected president are often labeled as “moderates,” irrespective of their actual beliefs.
This labeling, Lydic argues, blurs the distinction between moderate and conservative views. “Because the word ‘moderate’ means much more than just believing Joe Biden won the election… And the media should not be labeling them as moderates just because they passed the low bar of not overthrowing the government,” she contends.
