President Harry Truman’s decision in 1947 to broadcast his annual State of the Union address on television was a bold move that set a precedent for how presidents communicate with the American people.
However, after more than three-quarters of a century, the traditional format of the State of the Union has become stale, resulting in declining viewership and less engagement from the public.
To revitalize the State of the Union and reach a wider audience, President Joe Biden should consider revamping how it’s delivered. Instead of a traditional speech, Biden could explore a multimedia approach that incorporates videos, photos, infographics, and interviews to present a more dynamic and engaging message.
This multimedia State of the Union could highlight key accomplishments and initiatives of the administration, such as improvements in employment, infrastructure projects, and the impact of healthcare policies on families.
By presenting information in a visually compelling manner, Biden could make his message more accessible and resonate with a broader audience.
Additionally, Biden could take a cue from the success of congressional hearings using multimedia, such as those of the Jan. 6 committee, to craft a strong narrative and effectively communicate complex issues.
While implementing a multimedia State of the Union would require careful planning and technological expertise to avoid glitches, history has shown that presidents who embrace new communication technologies tend to be successful.
By adopting a fresh approach to the State of the Union, Biden could not only improve his communication with the American people but also enhance his chances of reelection.
