Marishka Davids, who was hospitalized after being set alight in an attack allegedly perpetrated by a man connected to her, has tragically passed away. Her mother, Mandy Davids, confirmed her daughter’s death, stating that Marishka passed away on Tuesday night at 11.05pm.
Marishka, 30, and her friend Zakkihya Raymond, 38, were both victims of the attack, suffering severe burns after being doused with petrol and set on fire in Florida, west of Johannesburg, on February 11. Sadly, Zakkihya Raymond succumbed to her injuries and was laid to rest on Monday, while Marishka fought for her life in the hospital.
A suspect was arrested on February 18, a week after the incident, and faces charges including murder, attempted murder, and arson. Last week, he appeared in court in absentia due to his injuries but is scheduled to appear in the Roodepoort magistrate’s court on Wednesday.
Marishka’s mother spoke about the devastating impact the attack has had on their family, especially on Marishka’s nine-year-old daughter and her brother Diego. She mentioned that the incident brought back painful memories of a previous tragedy in their family, further compounding their grief.
The community and authorities have been deeply shocked and saddened by this brutal attack, and efforts to support the family and seek justice for the victims are ongoing.
