On Monday, ambassadors at the UN General Assembly convened to discuss the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the challenges facing the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini briefed the assembly on the dire situation in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.
The assembly also debated the recent US veto of a Security Council draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. The US representative stated that they are working on a new draft resolution.
The veto was met with criticism from many member states, with the General Assembly president describing the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic, unconscionable, shameful” and emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire and increased humanitarian operations.
During the meeting, the 10 non-permanent Security Council members expressed regret at the US veto, stressing the need for the Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities.
The General Assembly heard about the critical work of UNRWA, with the agency facing an existential threat as it strives to provide aid to civilians in Gaza.
UNRWA’s chief, Philippe Lazzarini, highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and expressed concern that the situation could deteriorate further.
He called on countries to find a permanent resolution to the conflict, emphasizing the importance of humanitarian assistance and access to needy civilians.
The meeting underscored the urgent need for action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and support UNRWA’s vital work in the region.
