Brandon Gill, son-in-law of right-wing commentator Dinesh D’Souza, has secured the GOP nomination for a U.S. House seat in Texas’ 26th District.
Gill, a former investment banker, gained attention in 2022 for launching the DC Enquirer, a right-wing website that promoted 2000 Mules, D’Souza’s debunked conspiracy film about the 2020 election.
In a field of 11 candidates vying to succeed retiring Representative Michael Burgess, Gill emerged victorious with nearly 60 percent of the vote in the solidly Republican district. He is now heavily favored to win the general election against Democrat Ernest Lineberger III in November.
Before 2022, Gill was not involved in politics. However, with the launch of the DC Enquirer, he quickly became known for promoting pro-Donald Trump content and election conspiracy theories. Gill’s active support for 2000 Mules, which alleged widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, garnered attention.
The film was widely debunked by fact-checkers, and in a recent court hearing, the group on which the film was based admitted they had no evidence to support their claims.
Despite facing millions of dollars in attack ads from two GOP super PACs targeting far-right Republican candidates, Gill received endorsements from prominent figures within the Republican Party’s MAGA faction, including Trump, Cruz, Gaetz, Lee, and the McCloskeys.
The McCloskeys gained fame in 2020 for brandishing firearms at Black Lives Matter protesters in St. Louis. Gill’s focus remains on promoting claims of election fraud in 2020. In a recent post, he stated, “No we are not going to ‘move on’ from a stolen election.
Secure our elections!” His victory in the primary reflects the continued influence of the Trump-aligned faction within the GOP and the enduring impact of conspiracy theories surrounding the 2020 election.
