China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized China’s commitment to being a force for peace in the world while addressing reporters in Beijing. Despite China’s deepening ties with Russia, especially amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, Wang maintained China’s stance as a promoter of stability and progress globally.
Wang highlighted the strategic choice behind the increasingly close relationship between China and Russia, noting the record bilateral trade of $240 billion in 2023. He portrayed this alliance as a new paradigm in big power relations, emphasizing the importance of avoiding conflicts and preventing the resurgence of a Cold War.
China has positioned itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict, advocating for peace through a 12-point peace plan released on the war’s first anniversary. Wang reiterated China’s objective and impartial position on Ukraine, calling for peace talks to prevent further escalation.

During the press conference, Wang addressed various global issues, including the conflict in Gaza, China-US relations, and the South China Sea dispute. He condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, urging immediate ceasefire and peace talks. Wang reaffirmed China’s support for a two-state solution and Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations.
Regarding China-US relations, Wang expressed optimism for stable and consistent relations based on mutual respect and cooperation. Despite disagreements over Taiwan, trade, and other issues, Wang emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence and cooperation between the two nations.
Wang also issued warnings against acts of hegemony and bullying in the South China Sea, reaffirming China’s commitment to defending national sovereignty and security. He opposed any attempts to undermine China’s interests in the disputed waters, which have seen tensions rise with neighboring countries like the Philippines and Vietnam.
