Republicans on the House Oversight Committee have invited Hunter Biden and several of his former business associates to testify publicly before Congress, scheduling a March 20 hearing following a closed-door deposition of the president’s son last week.
The invitation comes after Hunter Biden spent more than six hours answering questions from GOP investigators who have been leading efforts to impeach his father. However, the deposition did not provide the smoking gun Republicans hoped for in their investigation.
The hearing, titled “Influence Peddling: Examining Joe Biden‘s Abuse of Public Office,” is also expected to include Biden’s former business partner Devon Archer, as well as two other former business associates.
During his deposition, Hunter Biden strongly defended himself against GOP investigators, arguing that their impeachment investigation was baseless and would fail to connect his father with any wrongdoing in his business dealings.
In his opening statement, Hunter Biden said, “I am here today to provide the committees with the one uncontestable fact that should end the false premise of this inquiry: I did not involve my father in my business.”
He emphasized that his father was unaware of or involved in his business activities, including his dealings with Chinese business leaders.
“I will probably say this 1,000 times, my father had absolutely no knowledge of, no involvement in, had no — any way was – awareness of my business relationship with Jonathan Li,” Hunter Biden reiterated. Biden’s attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the hearing invitation.
