China has called for an immediate ceasefire in the war in Gaza, describing the conflict as a “disgrace to civilisation.” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the international community to prioritize a ceasefire and ensure humanitarian relief in the region, emphasizing that the war has created a humanitarian disaster and must be stopped.

Despite efforts by mediators, including the United States, Egypt, and others, to negotiate a truce, the conflict has stretched into its sixth month. President Joe Biden has urged Hamas to accept a ceasefire plan with Israel before the Muslim fasting month begins, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The war has led to significant devastation in Gaza, with vast stretches reduced to rubble and a humanitarian disaster unfolding for its 2.4 million people. Recent reports indicate that at least 20 people have died of malnutrition and dehydration, with children being among the victims.

Efforts to provide aid to Gaza have been hampered by the ongoing conflict, with the United Nations warning of “catastrophic levels” of hunger in northern Gaza. The situation is dire, with thousands of lives at risk unless more aid and medical supplies reach the region.

Despite these challenges, there are ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the crisis. However, key obstacles remain, including Hamas’ demands and Israel’s military operations.

The international community, including China, continues to call for an end to the violence and a resolution to the conflict through peaceful means.
