Blur’s Dave Rowntree is making a foray into politics as he gears up to run as the Labour parliamentary candidate for Mid Sussex in the upcoming general election.
The Britpop star expressed his excitement, stating that he was “absolutely thrilled” about his selection, which was announced late on Wednesday.
The Mid Sussex constituency includes Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Hurstpierpoint, and surrounding villages, and is currently represented by Conservative MP Mims Davies, who was elected in 2019.
Rowntree, known for his role as the drummer in Blur, a band he co-founded in London in the 1980s with singer Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, and bassist-turned-cheesemaker Alex James, is eager to bring change to the area.

In a statement to the Guardian, he expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to become Labour’s first MP for Mid Sussex, highlighting the need for fresh energy and vision in the area.
The Mid Sussex Labour team supported Rowntree, stating, “We are thrilled that you are going to win Mid Sussex for Labour, and our team is with you all the way.” Rowntree’s venture into politics is not new, as he has been actively involved in the Labour Party for years.
He previously served on Norfolk County Council from 2017 to 2021 and ran as the Labour candidate for the Church Street seat in a Westminster City Council by-election in 2008. Additionally, he sought Labour’s nomination for the Norwich South constituency in 2011.
With his background in music and his experience in local politics, Rowntree brings a unique perspective and passion to his candidacy. He aims to bring positive change and representation to the residents of Mid Sussex.
