President Biden confirmed on Friday that, depending on Trump’s behavior, he may refuse to debate former President Donald Trump ahead of their anticipated election rematch. Biden’s comments came as he left the White House for a campaign trip to Philadelphia.
Trump had previously stated that Biden must agree to debate him, expressing the importance of discussing issues vital to America and the American people. Trump’s message, posted on his Truth Social platform, called for debates to be held anytime, anywhere, and anyplace.
The two candidates had two debates in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. During these debates, Trump aggressively questioned Biden on policy and his alleged involvement in his son and brother’s foreign business dealings.
Despite Trump leading Biden by an average of 1.8% in national polls, according to the RealClearPolitics average, the former president faces up to four criminal trials ahead of the election, making this an unprecedented contest.
Trump is also aiming to become just the second president to win non-consecutive terms in office, the last being Democrat Grover Cleveland 132 years ago.
