During a panel discussion at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, Meghan Markle opened up about the distressing experience of enduring online bullying, which she described as “cruel,” particularly during her pregnancies.
Markle revealed that she’s currently taking a step back from social media for her own well-being, having faced significant bullying and abuse online while expecting her children, Archie and Lilibet, and during the period when she had a newborn.
Her son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, was born on May 6, 2019, followed by the arrival of their daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on June 4, 2021.
Reflecting on the intensity of the online harassment, Markle expressed bewilderment at the level of cruelty exhibited by some individuals. She emphasized that it’s not merely petty remarks but rather outright cruelty that she encountered.
Addressing the broader issue of online safety, especially concerning children, Markle stressed the imperative need for action. She recognized the paradox of social media platforms, acknowledging the positive potential for sharing insights and brilliance, while also lamenting the prevalence of hate speech and dangerous rhetoric that can severely impact mental health and physical safety.
Markle pointed out the disturbing trend of women directing hate towards other women online. She highlighted the responsibility of high-level executives and philanthropists, urging them to enact systemic changes to combat online abuse effectively.
Markle called for accountability among ordinary social media users, emphasizing the importance of fostering safe and respectful online spaces. She criticized the dehumanization rampant in digital interactions and media sectors, emphasizing the urgency of restoring empathy and compassion.
Markle and Prince Harry relocated to California in 2020, relinquishing their roles within the British royal family due to ongoing media intrusion into their lives, both in the U.S. and the U.K. Their decision to speak out against harassment and pursue a life away from the intense public scrutiny underscores their commitment to prioritizing mental well-being and personal autonomy.
