Former President Trump has stated that if reelected, one of his first actions would be to free the individuals imprisoned for their involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Trump expressed this intention on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he outlined his priorities, including closing the border and supporting drilling initiatives.

Trump’s remarks align with his previous statements expressing sympathy for those charged in connection with the Capitol attack. He has also suggested he would consider pardoning some of the individuals involved. Last year, Trump spoke at a fundraiser for defendants of the Jan. 6 riot.

It’s important to note that Trump himself is facing federal charges related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. He is facing charges in Washington, D.C., and Georgia for his efforts to remain in power after losing the election.

As of January 6, 2024, over 1,200 individuals had been charged in connection to the Capitol attack, with more than 450 facing charges related to assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers or employees.

Additionally, over 700 individuals have pleaded guilty to various federal charges related to the attack. Trump is expected to secure the Republican presidential nomination soon, setting the stage for a potential rematch with President Biden in the November election.
