Texas Governor Greg Abbott has reiterated his stance on artists pulling out of the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival over its sponsorship by the US Army, telling them not to come back.
Abbott made these comments while in Downing Street, where he signed an agreement with the UK on closer trade cooperation with Texas. He also discussed his friendship with former President Donald Trump, who he says considers him a potential vice presidential candidate for the 2024 election.
Regarding the SXSW situation, Abbott stated that the reason artists pulled out was because the festival is sponsored by the US military, and he emphasized the importance of supporting the military for the freedoms enjoyed in the US. He urged Americans to back the military regardless of their personal feelings.
In response to Abbott’s comments, SXSW stated that while they respect diverse viewpoints, they stand by their decision to include the military as a sponsor, as it aligns with their commitment to presenting ideas that shape the world.
Several artists, including hip hop trio Kneecap from Belfast, Northern Ireland, have withdrawn from the festival in solidarity with Palestine and to protest the festival’s links to weapons companies and the US military.
Abbott also spoke about his friendship with Trump, noting that it would be natural for the governor of Texas to be considered for a vice presidential shortlist. He expressed his focus on serving as governor and supporting Trump’s election efforts.
Abbott’s comments reflect his strong support for the military and his stance on artists protesting the military’s involvement in the festival. His relationship with Trump and his political aspirations were also highlighted during his visit to the UK.
