Hunter Biden’s lawyer announced on Wednesday that his client would not testify in a hearing related to the Republican-led impeachment inquiry into his father, President Joe Biden.
Republicans had requested Hunter Biden’s presence at a public hearing later in the month alongside his former business associates, some of whom have made allegations against him.
In a letter to Republicans, Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, cited a prior court hearing in California as the reason for his client’s inability to attend the congressional hearing.
Hunter Biden faces federal charges in California for failing to pay taxes on time, as well as charges in Delaware related to illegal possession of a firearm while struggling with addiction in 2018.
House oversight committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) confirmed that the hearing would proceed as planned, asserting that the American people demand accountability for what Republicans perceive as the Bidens’ corruption.
Republicans have accused Hunter Biden of engaging in lucrative business deals with foreign nationals from Ukraine and China, alleging that he essentially sold access to his father, Joe Biden. Despite extensive investigations, including scrutiny of Hunter Biden’s bank records and laptop, Republicans have failed to substantiate their claims.
During a private deposition last month, Hunter Biden maintained that his father was not involved in his business dealings. Despite initially refusing to testify, he eventually spoke to lawmakers for several hours, reiterating that his father had no involvement in his work.
Hunter Biden made a surprise appearance at a January hearing on holding him in contempt of Congress. Lawmakers confronted him, and compromising photos from his laptop were displayed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).
Recent developments have cast doubt on the credibility of evidence in the impeachment case, particularly after an FBI informant’s claim of bribes paid to the Bidens by a Ukrainian oligarch was debunked last month.
While some Republican lawmakers believe that there is insufficient evidence to impeach Joe Biden, Comer has scheduled a public hearing for March 20 and insisted on Hunter Biden’s attendance.
