Last night marked a significant milestone in the 2024 presidential race as both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump officially secured their respective party nominations after a trio of primaries.
Decision Desk HQ made the decisive call for President Biden at 7:00 pm EST, coinciding with the Georgia polls’ closure. Biden’s victory in the Peach State resounded, capturing 95.2% of the vote.
Notably, the total turnout in the 2024 Democratic primary surpassed previous contests featuring incumbent Democratic presidents, underscoring strong support for Biden within the party ranks.
On the Republican side, Donald Trump emerged victorious in Georgia’s GOP Primary with 84.5% of the vote, although Nikki Haley garnered a notable protest vote, securing 77,769 votes.
Despite Haley’s significant showing, Trump’s dominance was evident, particularly in Atlanta, where he maintained a strong lead. However, the overall voter turnout of 587,361 fell short of the 2020 Republican primary when Trump ran unopposed.
Mississippi saw Biden running unopposed, while Trump claimed an overwhelming 92.6% of the vote. Trump’s momentum continued out west, where he secured victory in the Hawaii Caucuses with an impressive 97% of the vote.
As the polls closed in Washington at 11:00 pm EST, Decision Desk HQ confirmed that Donald Trump had amassed enough delegates to become the presumptive 2024 Republican nominee.
Despite this, Nikki Haley continued to draw significant support, capturing 21.8% of the vote in the Evergreen State. Conversely, the Democratic Party saw about 7.5% of voters opting for the Uncommitted option against Biden.
The results of these primaries solidify Biden and Trump’s positions as the standard-bearers for their respective parties in the upcoming presidential election.
With the nominations secured, the focus now shifts to the campaign trail as both candidates gear up for what promises to be a closely contested race for the White House.
