The latest polls following President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address indicate that he did not gain significant traction with the American public and may have even experienced a slight decline in approval.
According to a Yahoo News/YouGov survey conducted immediately after Biden’s March 7 address, only 39 percent of respondents expressed approval of his performance, while 55 percent disapproved.
This represents no notable improvement compared to previous polls, with approval remaining at 40 percent and disapproval at 56 percent in January. Moreover, in a head-to-head comparison with former President Donald Trump, Biden’s support remained relatively stagnant.
While the January poll showed Biden with 44 percent support compared to Trump’s 45 percent, the latest results indicate that Biden maintained 44 percent support while Trump gained a slight edge at 46 percent, although still within the margin of error.
These findings are consistent with other pre- and post-State of the Union polls, which similarly showed Biden’s approval ratings either stagnating or slightly decreasing.
For instance, a Forbes/Harris poll conducted in late February showed Biden with a 39-percent approval rating, which dipped to 37 percent in early March. Similarly, an Economist/YouGov poll indicated a drop from 43 percent approval in late February to 39 percent in mid-March.
FiveThirtyEight’s polling analysis also revealed a minor shift, with Biden’s approval rating slightly increasing from 37.9 percent to 38 percent, while his disapproval rating remained high at 56 percent.
As Biden and Trump both secure enough delegates to clinch their party’s presidential primary contests, they are on course for a potential rematch of the 2020 election.
With Biden’s approval ratings showing little improvement, the upcoming presidential election could prove to be highly competitive, shaping the future direction of the country.
