Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt visited the University of Sunderland on Friday to engage with media students following the government’s endorsement of the Crown Works Studios project.
The duo explored the MediaCentre at St Peter’s Campus, observing the university’s cutting-edge television and radio studios and interacting with students enrolled in various creative courses.
The government’s commitment includes £37 million in funding and enhanced authority for the North East Mayoral Combined Authority (NEMCA) to facilitate the development of one of Europe’s largest filmmaking complexes on the Wear riverside.

This initiative forms part of a broader devolution deal empowering local leaders with resources to address regional regeneration priorities, as announced in the Spring Budget.
The proposed film studios, a collaboration between Fulwell 73 and Cain International (FulwellCain Studios), are anticipated to generate over 8,000 employment opportunities in the north-east.
Sir David Bell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sunderland, emphasized the project’s significance in providing opportunities for aspiring creatives while bolstering the region’s economy.
During their visit, Prime Minister Sunak and Chancellor Hunt were accompanied by Sir David, Leo Pearlman of Fulwell 73, and Patrick Melia of Sunderland City Council.
The University’s existing programs in Film and TV production are poised to play a vital role in preparing the workforce for this endeavor.
