This week, Julia Lopez MP, Minister for Data and Digital Infrastructure, took a proactive stance on broadband infrastructure deployment in the UK by presenting an open letter to all fixed-line operators.
The letter aims to address the growing concerns surrounding the installation of new telegraph poles and advocate for shared infrastructure among operators.
Lopez highlighted the widespread frustration expressed by constituents and MPs alike regarding the duplication of overhead fiber networks, particularly in rural areas.
Many constituents feel powerless over how infrastructure is deployed in their local communities, leading to negative perceptions of full fiber deployment.
In response to these concerns, Lopez urged fixed-line operators to take prompt action and implement a refreshed set of guidelines. These guidelines ensure communities feel engaged in deploying new broadband infrastructure while allowing operators to continue expanding their networks.
Emphasizing the importance of telegraph poles as vital infrastructure for delivering faster connectivity, Lopez acknowledged the commendable efforts of most telecom companies in deploying connectivity with community support.
However, she noted instances where firms risk losing vital community support by inappropriately or unnecessarily installing new infrastructure.
As part of the government’s efforts to address these issues, Lopez announced forthcoming revisions to the Cabinet Siting and Pole Siting Code of Practice.
These revisions will ensure that telegraph pole and cabinet installations are placed appropriately, with input from local authorities and communities.
These changes aim to foster greater community engagement in broadband infrastructure deployment while facilitating operators’ network expansion efforts.
By encouraging infrastructure sharing and community involvement, the government seeks to accelerate broadband deployment and offer more excellent choices to consumers.
Lopez concluded her letter by thanking operators for their efforts in advancing the country’s connectivity goals. She emphasized the pivotal role of infrastructure sharing in garnering public support and expediting broadband deployment.
In response to Lopez’s letter, telecom operators are poised to reassess their deployment strategies, prioritizing infrastructure sharing and community engagement to address the concerns and ensure more effective broadband deployment nationwide.
