Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly criticized the decision by the Accountant-General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, to organize a retreat for state commissioners for finance in London.

Obi, a prominent figure within the party, condemned the move as wasteful and inappropriate, particularly given the current economic challenges facing Nigeria.

In a statement issued by his campaign team, Obi questioned the rationale behind holding such an event abroad, especially in a city as expensive as London.

He argued that the funds allocated for the retreat could have been better utilized to address pressing issues within Nigeria, such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.

Obi emphasized the need for government officials to lead by example and demonstrate fiscal responsibility, especially at a time when many Nigerians are struggling to make ends meet.

He called on the Accountant-General to reconsider the decision and opt for a more cost-effective and locally-based approach to conducting the retreat.

Obi’s criticism underscores broader concerns within the Labour Party and among the Nigerian public about government spending and accountability.

As a presidential candidate, he is positioning himself as a champion of prudent financial management and transparency in governance, pledging to prioritize the needs of ordinary citizens if elected to office.
