Entrepreneur and Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis has launched a scathing critique of the Conservative Party’s performance, declaring that they “have no right to stay in power” given their track record in government. Despite having previously donated to the Tories, Paphitis lambasted their handling of affairs, particularly in recent years.
In an interview on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Paphitis expressed his dismay at the Conservatives’ lackluster performance, accusing them of being preoccupied with internal matters rather than fulfilling their elected responsibilities.
He emphasized that their focus should have been on governing effectively rather than on internal politics. Regarding the recent Budget, Paphitis pulled no punches, describing it as “the last act of a very demob happy bunch.”
He criticized the lack of creativity and innovation in revenue-raising measures, asserting that the Treasury missed opportunities to generate more funds.
Paphitis also condemned the reported remarks made by the Tories’ major donor, Frank Hester, about Diane Abbott, describing them as “appalling” and “abhorrent.” He called for Hester’s expulsion from the party if he is indeed a member, characterizing such rhetoric as criminal.
In Paphitis’s view, the problems within the Conservative Party stem from its leadership, suggesting that a “fish rots from the top.” He lamented the divisive nature of current politics and expressed concern about the repercussions of such polarization.
Paphitis’s remarks come amid growing turmoil within the Tory Party, with speculation swirling about the potential ousting of Chancellor Rishi Sunak before the upcoming general election. The entrepreneur’s outspoken criticism reflects broader discontent within certain quarters toward the party’s direction and leadership.
